Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a condition that can affect the brain and spinal cord, causing a wide range of potential symptoms, including problems with vision, arm or leg movement, sensation or balance.

It can occasionally be mild, but MS is a lifelong condition that may cause serious disability, and it is one of the most common causes of disability in younger adults.

Average life expectancy is slightly reduced for people with MS.

My Language Hub Translation Division works in the language adaptation and linguistic validation of medical questionnaires.

This is a very important process before medical questionnaires are released to the general public.

Let’s say you go to your GP. In order to assess your condition, the GP or nurse gives you a medical questionnaire to complete. You would like it to make sense, wouldn’t you?

You may not be aware of that:

  1. Highly qualified medical specialists write these questionnaires, sometimes in their own language
  2. The questionnaires are translated into, say, American English.
  3. The questionnaire in American English has to be adapted to British English for the general public in the UK.

And this is where My Language Hub comes in! We do the adaptations of these medical questionnaires.

The importance of this step lies that you, the patient, focus on completing the questionnaire to the best of your ability, and without any distractions.

For this important step, we need the assistance from the general public to “pilot” the questionnaire and discuss the language used. Is the spelling correct? Does this question “sound” right to the British English native speaker?

And this is where YOU come in! Your specific medical condition is NOT to be discussed. You use the knowledge of your own medical condition to assess the appropriacy and correctness of the questionnaire.

At the moment, My Language Hub is recruiting patients with Multiple Sclerosis to disccuss the language used in medical questionnaires. A monetary incentive is offered for your time and participation.

Patients must be:

  • > 18 or over,
  • > British English native speaker.

And do not hesitate to contact us if you have questions.
