What Subtitling is
Subtitling services help international businesses enter new markets by translating the original language of a video into a foreign language. The translated text is displayed on screen so you can reach a whole new audience; subtitles aid viewers who can hear the audio but cannot understand the language.
Subtitling services are available for any video. Whether you want to add captions to your videos or translate a video into different languages, we'll take care of all the details and get it done quickly.
Subtitling vs captioning
Subtitling is not exactly the same as captioning. Subtitles are intended for viewers who can hear the language but cannot understand what is being said. Captions are meant for hearing-impaired individuals who can view video images but can't hear the soundtrack. These use words to communicate:
- The video's spoken content
- Song lyrics
- "Atmospherics," or sound effects that are part of the story
Open vs closed captions
Video captions can be either open or closed. Open captions are always visible on the screen and cannot be turned off, whereas closed captions can be turned on and off by the viewer.
Whenever we watch videos on the web, captions sometimes automatically appear on the screen when the video is played. These are open captions. Closed captions are controlled by the user's device and appear only if the device supports them.
All major media-viewing applications support closed captions using our subtitling services, although some applications include this feature in stand-alone clients only and not in browser-based or mobile clients using our subtitling services.
