Navigating Risk Management Challenges for Mining Company
Background
My Language Hub offers more than just translation and localisation services. One of our main areas of work is Language and Cultural Consultancy, which involves providing linguistic and cultural support to clients operating in foreign environments. My Language Hub undertook a two-month assignment in Latin America, collaborating with a British risk management consultancy firm (RMC).
The Challenge
A comprehensive risk diagnosis by a small team highlighted existential challenges to a Tier 1 gold mining company’s Licence to Operate (LTO), and therefore to company operations as a whole. The challenge was compounded by the need for an in-depth understanding of Latin American Spanish and the local culture. Additionally, varying degrees of English proficiency among the local team members posed communication barriers.
The Solution
Following withdrawal of license and closure of mine, RMC deployed a team to write the LTO strategy needed to protect company value and reputation, drawing on the earlier risk assessment. My Language Hub provided a native English speaker with fluency in South American Spanish to facilitate communication and a smooth onboarding. The consultant’s role was to add value by using advanced linguistic and cultural skills, encouraging realistic expectations of results and bridging the gap between first world business practices and traditional methods in Latin America. The consultant also provided support by interpreting during complex discussions and encouraging the local team to switch from English to Spanish when necessary. As a result, license for the mining company was restored.
The Result
The consultant’s efforts led to a successful operation in Argentina. The office ran smoothly and the consultant was able to facilitate and deal with unexpected issues. The UK company, RMC, made an excellent first impression by bringing, at their own expense, a native English speaker fluent in South American Spanish. The consultant’s in-depth knowledge of the risk consultancy ensured that the client’s message was conveyed accurately. The consultant’s proactive approach and personal touch in organising meetings added significant value to the client’s operations.
