Bridging Cultural and Linguistic Gaps for UCL’s Institute of Archaeology with MLH
My Language Hub (MLH) has established a long-standing partnership with University College London (UCL), providing a comprehensive suite of language services, including transcription, translation, and interpreting. This case study focuses on a recent project with UCL’s Institute of Archaeology, highlighting MLH’s ability to navigate complex linguistic and cultural challenges.
The Challenge
The Institute of Archaeology at UCL embarked on a multi-month project involving collaboration with Korean research groups. The project required a range of language services, including:
- Remote Simultaneous Interpreting (RSI) in English and Korean for three workshops conducted via Zoom
- Translation of academic materials from English to Korean
- In-person Simultaneous Interpreting in English and Korean at a final conference in London.
A significant challenge was bridging the cultural gap between the British and Korean participants. The UCL team expressed concerns about understanding and effectively communicating with their Korean counterparts due to cultural differences.
MLH’s Solution
MLH deployed a team of highly experienced and qualified Korean interpreters, specialising in academic discourse. These interpreters played a crucial role in:
- Facilitating seamless communication during the virtual workshops, ensuring accurate and nuanced interpretation
- Providing precise and culturally sensitive translations of academic materials
